In a hilariously viral video, a dog has made his emotions abundantly clear about a recent addition to the household.

Since July 9, a TikTok video by @cutelittleidiots has garnered over 4.2 million views, featuring Meatball, a cane corso, expressing his feelings about his owners’ new baby with howls and groans. The video includes text overlay suggesting what Meatball might be trying to convey.

The text reads, “But mom…,” followed by, “I’m attempting to get my point across loudly. You can’t return the baby after 90 days, so I need you to take action.” When his owner asserts that the baby is here to stay, Meatball complains once again, with the text humorously retorting, “You’re being incredibly unreasonable.”

According to owner Jenn, Meatball was less than impressed with the newfound human in the house. They reside in Miami, Florida, along with their three-month-old baby. Jenn revealed to Newsweek that upon encountering the baby for the first time, Meatball’s reaction was confusion and fear. He attempted to sniff the baby but quickly became scared and ran away.

This behavior persisted for three weeks, and whenever the baby would cry, Meatball would retreat and hide behind the couch.

Dog trainer Joe Nutkins explained that pets can have various reactions when a baby joins the family, ranging from excitement and eagerness to be involved in every step, to worry, fear, or what may be perceived as “jealousy.” While dogs are unable to feel true envy, they can certainly exhibit signs of feeling left out.

When a new member is welcomed into the family, dogs naturally require some time to adjust. Nutkins emphasized that it’s not solely the presence of the baby that can confuse them. Dogs have heightened senses, particularly in terms of hearing, sight, and scent. Sudden changes in scent, such as new baby products like lotions and creams, can be disorienting for them. Nutkins recommended familiarizing dogs with these scents in advance.

Additionally, it can be beneficial to introduce dogs to baby-related items like cribs, strollers, and baby gates, so they become accustomed to their presence. By making these new additions known to dogs, it helps alleviate any anxiety they may experience when the baby arrives.

While some dogs immediately embrace the new arrival, forming close bonds, other dogs may mistakenly believe that the preparations are for their own benefit. For instance, Kobe, a golden retriever, assumed that a freshly decorated nursery was intended for him.

Jenn described Meatball as an opinionated dog with an extravagant personality. She receives messages from people who express how Meatball brightens their day, which brings her immense joy.

According to Nutkins, dogs can feel left out when attention shifts to the baby, both from the family and visitors. Going for a short walk, engaging in playtime in the garden, or spending grooming sessions with them can boost their self-confidence and reassure them that the baby isn’t taking away their place in the family.
