A tragic incident occurred in Cortland County, New York, resulting in the untimely death of a 58-year-old man named James R. Parker. While accompanying a friend on a hunting expedition, Parker suffered a fatal crossbow injury that was inflicted accidentally during their pursuit of a skunk. Reports from the Associated Press confirm that the unfortunate incident took place on Friday.

By approximately 9 p.m., paramedics had already arrived at the scene to attend to Parker’s injuries when New York State Troopers were called in. The friend who was hunting alongside Parker made the emergency call from a residence located in Taylor, New York, which happened to be in close proximity to the area where they were tracking the skunk.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Parker was tragically shot due to an unintended discharge by his hunting companion. At this time, the identity of the other hunter has not been disclosed.

Newsweek contacted the New York State Troopers for an official statement or any further updates regarding this incident. The information received in response provided a comprehensive overview of the established facts surrounding the case.

Sadly, Parker’s accidental fatality is not an isolated occurrence within the realm of hunting accidents.

In December 2020, a 52-year-old man from Alabama lost his life as a result of a fatal fall while engaging in a hunting expedition in the woods. The individual was situated on a tree stand, a raised platform commonly used for hunting to gain a broader vantage point, when he plummeted from the structure, leading to his demise.

Following his failure to return home later that day, his family initiated a search in the surrounding area. Upon discovering his lifeless body, the authorities were promptly alerted. The subsequent investigation concluded that his death was a true accident, with no evidence of foul play.

During a hunting venture in West Virginia last November, Charles Donivan, aged 48, tragically experienced a similar fate as he fell from a tree stand, striking his head against a rock. Donivan was accompanied by his son, who immediately attempted CPR in an effort to revive him. Unfortunately, despite their swift response, emergency responders arrived too late, and Donivan had already passed away.

Moreover, another hunter encountered a fatal incident when attacked and killed by a grizzly bear in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Reserve, located in Alaska. The incident took place while the hunter was participating in a ten-day moose hunting excursion. Remarkably, this was the first documented instance of such a fatality occurring within the park.
