Benjamin, the Chief Keeper, heard a loud sound and observed a flurry of movement among the elephants. Even the typically composed elder females seemed startled by the unforeseen occurrence.

As the other elephants hurried over, Mr. Benjamin soon realized that Melia, a formerly orphaned elephant, had given birth, and the baby was still partially enveloped in a pale placenta.

The trust revealed that Melia’s pregnancy had gone unnoticed, as she cleverly disguised her weight, being a sizable elephant. The prior night, she had visited the enclosures, but there were no indications of her imminent labor.

Milo’s arrival brought immense delight to the entire sanctuary, and this heartwarming tale is evidence of the affection and attention these elephants receive under the vigilant care of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
